Does the word count include punctuation?
This tool provides statistics across multiple dimensions: Total Characters includes all characters (spaces and punctuation); Characters (no spaces) excludes whitespace; Chinese Characters counts only Hanzi (excluding punctuation); English Words are segmented by spaces and punctuation; Punctuation counts Chinese and English punctuation separately. You can choose the appropriate dimension for essays, official documents, tweets, etc. In most Chinese contexts, 'Word Count' refers to Chinese characters + English words.
How are Chinese characters counted?
This tool counts only Hanzi characters (Unicode range \u4e00-\u9fff and extensions), excluding Chinese punctuation, numbers, English letters, and spaces. For example, '你好,世界!' has a Chinese character count of 4 ('你好世界'), while the Chinese comma and exclamation mark are counted in 'Punctuation'. To count 'Chinese characters including punctuation', refer to Total Characters minus English words and numbers.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is estimated based on average reading speeds: approx. 300 Chinese characters per minute (5 chars/sec) and 200 English words per minute (3.3 words/sec). This tool estimates separately based on Chinese character and English word counts. Actual speed varies by individual; professional literature and technical docs usually take longer. Results are for reference only.
Why do my stats differ from Word?
Different tools use different counting standards: Microsoft Word's 'Word Count' usually equals Chinese characters + English words; 'Characters (with spaces)' is close to this tool's Total Characters. Google Docs, WPS, and various editors have slightly different rules. It is recommended to follow the word count rules of your target platform (e.g., thesis system, social media platform). This tool provides all dimensions for easy comparison.
